Installing a WordPress Theme

Published by George: September 1, 2010

Once you’ve purchased your theme, it’s time to get it installed and activated. Happily, the process is SO simple, even a frog can do it!

When you download your theme, it will arrive in .zip format. You now need to extract the files from this compressed file. Your computer should provide you with tools to do this, but just in case, we have a short ZIP tutorial, as well. Remember to unzip it to somewhere that you will remember, like your Desktop.

Once your theme is unzipped, you will need to upload it to your server using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or the equivalent tool provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or hosting company. If you are uncertain about any of this, you can take a look at George’s very cool FTP tutorial. Otherwise, your ISP will be able to assist you.

The unzipped theme folder must be uploaded to the /wp-content/themes/ folder on your server. When you’re done it’ll look like this: /wp-content/themes/theme-name/

Excellent! Your theme is now on your server and it’s time to activate it.

Log into your WordPress Dashboard and click through to ‘Themes’ under the ‘Appearance’ menu on the left side of your Dashboard. The page will show all the themes you can choose from. Here, you can activate themes, preview themes and delete themes. In this case we want to activate a theme, so, go ahead and click on “Activate” under the theme you’ve just uploaded, as I’ve high-lighted under Greyzed, below:

Congratulations! Your new theme is now activated and ready to dispense awesomeness when you click to your website.
